1. Use your own words. Talk 'like someone talks to a friend.' (See Exodus 33:11) Do you phone a friend and say, 'O Thou Most Benificent and Esteemed Companion, wilt Thou in Thy multitudinous kindnesses play basketball with me?' Do you need a script or book of what to say?

  2. Pray anywhere, any time. Even when your mobile phone is out of range, God is watching and knows your thoughts. In traffic (eyes open!), when you have a big win, when you feel like thumping someone, when you have a decision to make, any old time… e.g. When Nehemiah, a Bible hero, was asked a pressure question by the king, he flashed up a quick silent prayer and then answered. He also spent time in regular, private prayer. (Nehemiah 2:1-6; 1:3-11)

  3. Also have a regular time and place to pray. Jesus went bushwalking alone in the early morning to pray. (Mark 1:35) If you're not a morning person, make another time and stick to it - when you're too tired or busy or flat, when you don't feel like it, you need it most!
